(An Unprecedented Historical Recollection)

Hello everyone,

Attached is a true story I recently received—an account from half a century ago involving me, a group of American students, Taiwan, and the United States. The author, Liese Bender, was one of my music students at Northern Illinois University in the 1970s and among the first who helped me launch NIU’s Center for World Music. We traveled far and wide—even across the ocean to Hong Kong and Taiwan—and happened to witness a watershed moment in diplomatic history when relations were severed. The journey was full of twists and turns, and from the perspective of a young American woman in her early twenties, it reads with a special flavor, which is why I’m sharing it with you.

Liese later attended Professor Cecilia Chu Wang’s renowned Orff Workshops at the University of Kentucky twice, and she and her husband also visited us. All photos in the attachment were taken or kept by her; the last few are unrelated to the incident.
